Why & When you Need a Building Permit

building-permit2If you are having major work done in your home, a building permit protects you and the future occupants of the home. Florida State law requires that when you sell a property your are legally obligated to disclose any renovations that were done without a building permit. If you have remodeled without a permit you may be required to apply for a permit, have the building department inspect the renovations to be sure that the work is up to code and in some cases you may be required to dismantle the work that was done without the permit.

A building permit is required if you:

• Change the footprint of the house
• Move a load-bearing wall
• Alter the roofline
• Create a new door or window opening
• Replace an electric stove wit a natural-gas model

Lucky enough

I think it’s safe to say that if you live in Naples, you know all about having houseguests. And despite all the sayings about three days and the smell of fish, etc., you have to thank them for one thing: They reintroduce us to this great town. We take them to the beach, to the zoo, to the theater, to the ballpark, to the golf course and sometimes to the dog track. The best of them treat us to dinner at restaurants we wouldn’t dare enter outside of summer when the specials run rampant. Houseguests remind us just where we are living — and why we are here. It’s not the grocery store or the gas station or the office or any of the locales that occupy our minds during a typical day. Look around. The incredibly blue, blue sky, the freshness of the air, the boulevards lined with flowers, palm trees and shrubs, all of them perfectly manicured, wending through neighborhoods of tasteful homes and picturesque water scenes. Where Do Most People Want to Live?

If you could live in any state, except the one you live in now, what state would you choose to live in?

The Harris Poll has asked this question every year since 1997. Among Echo Boomers, Hawaii drops out of the top five.

Here are the top-10 states across the age groups:

  2. Hawai
  3. Florida
  4. Colorado
